President in ‘Game of Thrones’ threat to Iran

US President Donald Trump issued an extraordinary ‘Game of Thrones’-style warning to Iran yesterday as he reimposed severe sanctions on the country’s regime.

The US president shared on social media an image of a movie-style poster, depicting himself alongside the words “Sanctions are Coming. November 5”.

US sanctions on Iran had been lifted under the controversial nuclear deal in 2015, but will be reimposed on Monday – the second batch of penalties since Mr Trump withdrew from the landmark agreement in May.

Mr Trump’s movie poster used a font similar to that employed by ‘Game of Thrones’, the popular and violent television fantasy series. His language echoed one of the show’s best-known slogans, “Winter is coming”.

HBO, the television network, criticised the president. In a statement it said: “We were not aware of this messaging and would prefer our trademark not be misappropriated for political purposes.”

Some stars of the show also critiqued the president’s poster on Twitter. Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, wrote “Not today”, and Sophie Turner, who portrays Arya’s sister Sansa, wrote “Ew”.

In moving ahead with reimposing sanctions on Iran, the US will grant waivers to eight countries to allow them to temporarily continue buying Iranian oil, officials said yesterday.

Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, did not say which eight countries would be exempted from the waivers but they were believed to be US allies such as India, Japan, Italy, South Korea and Turkey. (© Daily Telegraph London)
